Aaron Smith, a member of the Register of Professional Archaeologists since
2003, is one of a team of full-time Cultural Resource Analysts personnel at
the company’s
West Virginia office. He has a B.A. in historic preservation and a M.S. in
archaeological resources management. His areas of experience include historic
preservation and cultural resource management, historical and industrial archaeology,
historic materials analysis, historic building and context research and prehistoric
archaeology. He has participated and/or directed cultural resource compliance
work in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. Since 1995, these
have included approximately 250 Phase I field reconnaissances and subsurface
investigations, ten phase II National Register evaluations, and five phase
III data recovery investigations. Mr. Smith has also participated in and /
or directed various reconnaissance level architectural surveys in West Virginia,
Ohio, Kentucky, and Virginia. He also worked with members of ACRA, the ACHP,
the FCC, and the telecommunications industry for the development of the current
Nationwide Programmatic Agreement for Section 106 issues concerning the construction
of wireless communication towers.

In the past, Mr. Smith’s research has included African-American archaeology
and the study of material correlates to ethnicity. As a graduate student, he
co-authored a Department of Interior grant to study African-American pioneer
lifeways in the Midwest. Mr. Smith’s current research interests include
the study of industrial lifeways in West Virginia. He has documented and evaluated
the remains of several industrial communities throughout the state and is currently
in the process of completing an analysis of materials recovered from an early
twentieth century timber camp in Logan County, West Virginia.
For many projects Mr. Smith serves as a Principal Investigator. His responsibilities
include organizing and directing phase I, II and III archaeological projects,
overseeing analyses, and authoring reports. He is also responsible for conducting
field work and authoring reports concerning cultural historic reconnaissance
level surveys. His duties also include preparing scopes of work and budgets
and working closely with clients and agency personnel.
