In 2002, Darla received the Sigfus Olafson Award of Merit from the West Virginia Archaeological Society.

Darla Spencer has over 15 years of experience in the field of archaeology. She has been a member of the Register of Professional Archaeologists since 2000. In 1998, she completed a master's degree in sociology with an anthropological/archaeological focus at Marshall University. Darla has over thirty years of experience in graphics, drafting, and environmental evaluation. As an environmental analyst with the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH), Darla reviewed and wrote environmental documents for federal projects and was project manager on projects developed by environmental consultants. She also participated as a Field Technician on over 50 phase I surveys and several phase II evaluations while with the WVDOH.

As Secretary/Treasurer of the West Virginia Archeological Society, Darla has been responsible for the coordination of the annual state meetings of the WVAS since 1999. In 2002, she received the Sigfus Olafson Award from the WVAS for her contributions to West Virginia prehistory. In 2003, she conducted a project recording archaeological sites in the Lower Kanawha River Valley funded by a fellowship from the West Virginia Humanities Council (WVHC). In 2004, Darla received a grant from the WVHC to photograph artifacts at the Smithsonian Museum Support Center from the 1880s mound explorations of the Ohio Valley. In 2004, she received another grant from the WVHC to prepare and present exhibits of the photographs. She has also authored several entries on West Virginia prehistory for the West Virginia Encyclopedia.

Darla has been with CRA since 1998. During that time, she has conducted environmental coordination for NEPA-related projects. Currently, she is the Publications Editor for the West Virginia office. As such, she is responsible for all report production and quality control. This involves editing, formatting, scanning artifacts, and creating and importing graphics. She has taken numerous computer classes and is proficient in word processing, tables, graphics, desktop publishing, photo editing, and computer drafting.
