Cultural Resource Inventory for the Cabin Creek Phase VI Plan of Development in Wyoming

Project Name: Cabin Creek Phase VI Plan of Development
Location: Wyoming
Rural and/or Urban: Rural
Client: Pinnacle Gas Resources, Inc.
Dates: December 22, 2009 January 8, 2010
CRA Project Manager: Jason D. Weston

Project Description: In late December of 2009 Pinnacle Gas Resources, Inc. contracted CRA to complete report revisions and additional fieldwork for a Class III cultural resource inventory project that had been abandoned by the original consultant. This project was undertaken for proposed coalbed methane (CBM) development associated with federal minerals managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Buffalo Field Office . This cultural resource inventory was undertaken for compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. This project began with CRA staff meeting with archaeologists at the BLM Buffalo Field Office to obtain information and find out what specific report revisions and additional fieldwork were needed.

Preparation of the revised report for this project included additional background research of the Wyoming Cultural Records Office online database; an official files search request made to the Wyoming SHPO; examination of historic General Land Office (GLO) plat maps in the area and of the GLO land patent records; review of the Buried Soils Model developed by the Wyoming SHPO which is available through the Wyoming Cultural Resource Information System (WYCRIS) map database; and review of the Web Soil Survey, a database maintained by the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

The revised report was submitted to the Buffalo BLM on January 8, 2010 to meet the submission deadline. Snow cover prevented fieldwork before that date, but coordination with the BLM has arranged for an addendum report to be produced after the snow melts and fieldwork can be undertaken. The original inventory documented one prehistoric isolated find. The additional fieldwork will include the documentation of three archaeological sites and will evaluate them for eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places.
