Support Facilities and Equipment
The resources owned and used by Cultural Resource Analysts, Inc. (CRAI) to support its historic preservation efforts can best be divided between field and laboratory realms. Field work completed by CRAI is supported by a mobile field laboratory/trailer that not only makes travel more efficient, but greatly enhances the productivity of field crews engaged in the larger, more labor-intensive mitigation projects. The field trailer is simply hitched to any one of the company's nine field vehicles and once on site, a field laboratory is instantly available. Here, artifacts may be processed and/or computerized mapping endeavors may be completed nomatter what the weather outside. The firm owns the latest in near surface remote sensing, GIS/GPS, EDM surveying equipment, data storage devices and laptop field computers. Major mitigation
activity is also supported by not less than ten heavy duty water pumps, three Flot-Tech flotation devices, eight giant water sluices, mobile telephones in all of the company vehicles and a full complement of traditional archaeological gear such as shaker screens, shovels and trowels.
The 15,000 square feet corporate headquarters includes facilities for both analytical
and report preparation activities. The former are supported by a variety of commercial
software programs as well as those that were written especially for Cultural Resource
Analysts personnel. This software is available to all employees through an intra-office
local area computer network accessible by over twenty-five Intel based
workstations. Computer Aided Design (AutoCad and MicroStation), geographic information system/cartography (ArcGIS, ArcView, Surfer), word processing documents, and spreadsheet applications are produced on one of three laser
printers, a color laser printer or an E-size color plotter. Laboratory and report
preparation activities are supported by an in-house reference library of regional
archeological literature that includes in excess of 7,000 volumes. All reports are
produced in-house. Since 1984, we have completed over 2,500 technical reports.
